K P Jayan singing in Arabic for Indo Arab Cultural Festival closing ceremony at KSC Abu Dhabi
Excerpts about various news articles on Mr. K P Jayan:
Indian expat to sing Arabic songs
By Barbara Bibbo / GULF NEWS(published 2002)
The Arabic musical world boasts hundreds of singers from different nationalities, but all from Arab countries. The exception is K.P. Jayan, an Indian living in Dubai, who is probably the first non-Arab to sing in Arabic.
The Back-2-School Surprises Organising Committee has given Jayan a chance to sing for the first time in front of a UAE audience during the weeklong programme.
Jayan made his debut yesterday evening at the BurJuman Centre where the crowds at the mall listened amazed at the Indian singing in Arabic.
Today, he will perform at the Oasis Centre at 7.30 pm and later the same day at BurJuman and Al Mazaya centres. His repertoire includes songs by the most popular Arabic singers such as Nabil Shail, Mohammed Abdouh, Amr Diab, Hisham Abbas and many others.
Jayan's love of Arabic music started when he heard 'Rahalti', the refrain of a song by the Kuwaiti singer, Abdallah Ruwaishi. At that time he was living in Bahrain and was a singer of classical Indian and Western music.
So deeply impressed was he by "Rahalti" that he started to listen to Arabic music and to repeat the sounds and words that he heard on tapes and over the radio. He directed all his passion and vocal abilities towards Arabic music.
He sang in Arabic for the first time on the occasion of Bahrain National Day and was praised for his voice and singing abilities.
"It was my debut in Arabic and I was terribly sad. Even though the public appreciated the performance, somebody noticed that my pronunciation was not good. So I promised myself that I would learn the correct accent and I did not sing again until I had learned how to pronounce all the words properly."
Jayan has been living in Dubai with his family since 1993 and works as a marketing executive in a Dubai-based company.
So far, he has performed in Bahrain and Qatar, where he has been appreciated and admired for his singing and his love of the Arabic musical heritage.
"I have received important support from UAE national friends, who have helped me improve my language and my pronunciation. Their generosity has supported me throughout the years and nowadays I prefer to sing in Arabic rather than in my mother tongue, Malayalam."
Jayan is currently recording his own album with original Arabic songs written and composed in cooperation with his national friends.
"I dedicate all my spare time to Arabic music and I dream of becoming a full-time singer and holding concerts all over the Arab countries," he revealed.
Jayan, who now speaks Arabic fluently, takes part in a radio programme on Asianet, giving lessons in Arabic, Indian and Western classical music.
"I love music and spend all my spare time on it together with my son. My son is a percussionist and my daughter a singer. She is performing with me this week."
His 12-year-old son, Tulsi, who is learning Arabic, supports his father by singing with him in Arabic and helping him realise his dream and turn these into reality.
Khaled Chaabi, from the Back-2-School Organising Committee, noted: "His debut is going to be a real success. This is the first time we are listening to an expatriate singing in Arabic. The public will love him. "

Kozhikode: A Dubai-based Arabic singer, K.P. Jayan, and his daughter Tulasi, who performs along with her father, have been accorded a reception at their native village, Chombal, at Vadakara in Kozhikode district. The programme was organised by Gopi Arts and Sports Club, in connection with Chombal Mahotsavam, on Saturday.
The father and daughter performed in a concert on the occasion.
The lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri and the playback singers Gayatri, Rajesh and Vijay participated.
Jayan has been living in Dubai since 1993 and works as managing director of a company there. Said to be the first Keralite to sing Arabic songs,
Mr. Jayan is a familiar face to Arabs and non-Resident Indians in the Gulf nations. His style and pronunciation are so natural that he will be mistaken as an original Arabic singer, says T.P. Devaraj of Chombal.
Jayan's love for Arabic music started when he listened to a song, Rahalti, sung by a Kuwaiti singer, Abdulla Ruwaishi. At that time, he was staying in Bahrain. He then started to listen to Arabic music on the tape recorder and the local radio.
Mr. Jayan staged his maiden performance on Bahrain National Day. He sang one of his favourite Arabic songs, Awafi, sung by K.J. Jesudas.
However to his dismay, an Arab who was present among the audience later told him that his pronunciation was wrong.
The incident became the turning point in his career. Gradually he learned to master Arabic songs.
Nowadays, even Arabs, after hearing him sing, disbelieve that he is not an Arab. Mr. Jayan learned music from Mathoor Hariharan Aiyer and Harippad K.P.N. Pillai.
Any music lover who wish to contact Mr. K P Jayan may write to him at foodmandubai@yahoo.com

Satiyana Rangeela - a memorable performance by Mame Khan Manganiyar at KSC Abu Dhabi
The programme was presented by Sri Mame Khan Manganiyar and the style of music is called Manganiyar music.
Mame Khan Manganiyar has been born in a small village named Satto, situated close
to the Golden City of Jaisalmer. Since his early childhood his father Rana Khan,
who was a great singer and of the Manganiyar community, was his teacher and
source of inspiration. From him he learned a wide range of traditional folk songs
and Sufi music. These songs belong to the history of the Manganiyars since generations.
To enable him to develop his musical skills he got at the age of 12 a sponsorship
from the CCRT -Centre For Resources And Training, New Delhi-. A growing
number of concerts all over India is the result of years of rehearsal. He was invited
to play on many occasions for example in Mumbai, Delhi, Madras, Kerala, Bangalore,
Calcutta, Ahmadabad and many cities more.
Coming from a small village, it was a great step for his professional life to play in the USA first time in 1999. Since that time he is performing his music on the stages all over the world and fascinates the audience with his outstanding performance and unique voice. The numerous journeys to Europe, USA, Canada, Asia and
the Gulf Countries gave Mame Khan the opportunity to establish many
successful fusion projects in order to keep his old tradition alive in new ways.

Amrita TV Super Talent - Peter from Cochin on Mouth Organ
Mr. Peter (Peter chettan as we can affectionately call him) was one of the contestants in the 2nd round of Amrita TVs Super Talent reality show. Opting to perform using a mouth organ, he did present an excellent effort considering his age, limited opportunities, and shows he has presented. At the end, he also proved that Talents could not be tied down, whatever be the circumstances, there will be an opportunity one fine day, somewhere destined for a talented artist who keeps on practising and nurturing his / her skills. I always call it "Playing in the mind" and this is one example of such a talent. Not worried about his exit, as he stated, and now that he has become one of the available SUPER TALENTS, may his creative skills improve with each opportunity he gets from now on. As one of the judge Sri Mukesh rightly said, this is also an opportunity for the instrument "Mouth Organ" to come into spot light once again and may this exhibition of talent and skill bring out many artists, irrespective of their age to learn, practise and promote this handy instrument.
Amrita TV Super Talents - Arjun and Aromal on Tabala
Congratulations dear Arjun and Aromal. Excellent performance. Keep continuing the hard work, focus, concentration, innovativeness, improvisation and mutual understanding. God Bless and have a great journey ahead. Let Super Talent be the stepping stone in your life to greater heights in the world of performing arts.

Mesmerising magic at the Music Academy

Mesmerising magic at the Music Academy
Saranya ChakrapaniFirst Published : 23 Feb 2009 11:48:00 PM ISTLast Updated : 23 Feb 2009 04:12:54 PM ISTCHENNAI: LET the curtain rise on the maestros!” boomed PC Ramakrishna’s voice. It was a moment of a lifetime; everyone who sat within the familiar walls of the 80-year-old Music Academy knew it. Ghananjani 2009 was different. No, it wasn’t the red curtain that enticingly, slowly revealed every inch of the setting on stage. It wasn’t just the sandal-scented air and the colourful lights that paved the way to the commemoration of a musical evening. This moment that had just made our hearts skip a beat, was a bit more than all of that. It was an evening of five musical geniuses, who were all set to give us a little peep into their souls. It was an evening dedicated to the still loved and immensely missed founder of the Shakti Foundation, Velan Raghuvir, and thecause so close to his heart.
Sheer magic emanates from instruments in the hands of maestros like Zakir Hussain, Sivamani, Dominique Di Piazza, Stephen Devassy and U Shrinivas. Like PC Ramakrishna rightly put it, referring to Mandolin U Shrinivas, “There are musicians who get their names from an instrument. But here is an instrument that has got its name from the musician.” The world knew the magic they were capable of, after witnessing their previous performances through Remembering Shakti. This time around the canvas had two more colours splashed on it - the shy, Frenchman who strummed magic on the bass guitar and refrained from speaking too much due to his ‘strongly accented English’ , Dominique Di Piazza, and the 27-year-old, highly enthused pianist, Stephen Devassy.
Raw, mellow sounds erupted like smoke and filled the air as Shrinivas took the lead for the evening. Ustadji, eyes shut, allowed the music to seep into his system, and soon started playing in tune with the mandolin. Stephen Devassy, Dominique and Sivamani exchanged glances in silent communication to jam their own kind of music and began midway to join what Hussain and Shrinivas were intricately sculpting. The harmony was like a melting pot, gently guiding our ears and our senses to a spectacular confluence of any beat and sound that made music.
The chemistry between Ustadji, Sivamani and Shrinivas, reached a new high time and again. Sivamani played like a man possessed, making music out of everything from an old suitcase to a plastic bottle to his sophisticated drums and the pair of ghungroos he wore on his feet. Dominique’s strums soothingly, seductively made melodies and depths of six strings. Stephen Devassy’ s music seemed to reflect his own self, quickly transforming the laid-back, dreamy mood to electrifying magnetism.
They kept the best for the end. When Zakir Hussain playing, every fan in the audience was ready for him, keeping time with their hands, tears flowing down cheeks, lost in the magic his music creates. While he was capable of drowning us in the intensity of rhythm, he was also capable of beguiling us with his unassuming, humourous side. For, when Shrinivas congratulated him on his second Grammy, he gently lifted the tip of his silk kurta and took a little bow, the way, a timid ballerina would do, to an applauding auditorium.
Later, the kids of the Shakti Foundation, garlanded the musicians and posed delightedly for a group picture. Shati’s Ghananjani 2009, had the audience leave with the memories of a Saturday evening they’d carry for the rest of their lives.

Preeth - A challange is an opportunity

Welcome all,
I have been thinking of a suitable topic to start with my series of activities for Q4music for the year 2009. Youtube seems to have been non-accessible or blocked in this part of the world and so could not upload my regular music/performance/created videos. A few precious minutes of free time in the day to day life is very carefully utilised and relaxation, enjoyment and enhancement of knowledge automatically becomes an integral part of this daily routine. Super Talent reality show currently on in Amrita TV is one venue I visit in the evenings for this. Yesterday I happened to see three performances. Of which, one turned out to be outstanding.
Preeth, from Trivandrum, a student of Prof. Muthukad performed magic with miming capabilities. A young guy who has speech and hearing problem, turned out to be the star of the day. What a performance it turned out to be. Three minutes allotted time seemed to be more for him to express his talents when many others who are competing in the same show still ponder about the lack of available time. Excellent, amazing, captivating, and more I could add on. God bless this Super Talent contestant who proved yesterday that EVERY CHALLENGE IS AN OPPORTUNITY.
Let his performance be an inspiration to all those who are coming out to perform in this show and other shows about what they have and don’t in their hand and how they could improve it and present it to a presentable and appreciable form for the mass.
GOD bless him and may he conquer many more victories in the coming years.

PROGRESSION OF MAL. FILM MUSIC- ON THE RIGHT TRACK OR NOT???
Music is divine! Music is Universal! Music is soothing! Music is the Truth! Music is pain reliever ! Music takes you to a serenity... at times you are in trance ! Music brings peace of mind..!
Looking at the Mal film music scene it has gone through a metamorphosis.. from the simple tunes of folk and drama songs of 50s and early 60s to the sweet melodies filled with feel, lyrical quality, brilliant direction and sweet voices of mid 60s to late 70s... Perhaps that is aptly called the Golden Era of Mal Film music. ! Arrival of the great lyricists Vayalar, O N V, sreekumaran Thampi ,P.Bhaskaran, Yousuf Ali kecheri, to name a few along with brilliant music directors like Devarajan Master, Baburaj, Dhakshinamoorthy, Arjunan Master, Chidambaranath, Raghavan master again to name a few. The brilliance of their works were made evergreen or more aptly said immortal by the divine and golden voices of the likes of Yesudas, Janaki, Suseela and Jayachandran.. Gems produced by Devarajan- Vayalar or Baburaj-Bhaskaran , S.thambi-D.moorthi or Arjunan Mstr combinations became so touching When Yesudas gave voice to those creations.. The feel, sweetness, romance, depth, clarity and what not in his voice made all those songs evergreen in the listeners minds and hearts... Can any one ever forget the genius S.Janaki... Can anyone ever say that she was a non malayali? such is the commitment and talent she possessed that one can only sit and admire her.. what feel.. what a voice..
Baburaj's songs were given the full treatement the director wanted by Janakiamma.. Tharilittakanakal,. Sooryakanthi, thane thirinjum marinjum, vasantha panchami nalil, oru kochu pushpathin, eeranuduthumkondu, etc etc ..
Saddest part of that era was Devarjan Mstr -Janaki gems were extremely limited for reasons best known to them.. many theories and speculations had been there on this issue.. Suseela's classically rich voice gave some evergreen gems... then Jayachandran, the Bhava Gayakan stood on his own and kept his head high with own style of voice and singing.. !
Can we ever forget Salilda who revolutionised the mal music scene with his own style of music.. "Sagarame..." " kadarumasam", sarike, sandhye.., et etc... the list never ends.. all became hits..
Of course the contributions of Usha Khanna also cannot be forgotten.. !
The time passed and in 80s we saw the genius Ravindran Master emerging.. wow.. for a while one may wonder whether he belonged to the 70s golden era.. Perhaps to a large extent he and Johnson kept 80s and 90s going not to forget the likes of Ouseppachan, shyam, Jerry Amaldev etc..Pramadavanam, Devagangal ...etc will linger in our minds for ever.. But lyrical quality of many songs declined.. and slow transition of music into more mechanical, technical and modernity has been with lots of ups and downs. The other major gain for the musical scene was the melodius voice of Chitra and Sujatha.. There were underachievers like the brilliant Kannur Rajan , Gayathri etc with the turn of this century we saw the arrival of M.Jayachandran, Sarath,
and there was a revival in musical scene.. In between several trend changes took place.. some mediocre songs also came.. too much stress on technicalities and mechanisms used for recording.... But one has to adapt to the changes and one can only wish the musical scene will prosper in Malayalam.. Geniuses like Naushad too blessed us in between... classics from Dhwani songs?
Tailpiece.. : Can we ever forget Pransakhees, Thamasamenthes, indravallari, ayiram padasarangal... kayamboo, sundararavil nandana vaniyil , akale akale,, ,. chakravarthini, anuraga ganam pole, vasantha panchami, thaliritta kinakal,
Arikil, Himavahini, Chitra silapalikal, innale neeyoru sundararagamaym, ponveyil, ... list is endless... there is no space to put all here... ...
Sangeethame ..namikkatte aviduthe munnil???
